Alexander Wang has taken a super sporty direction this year, in both his boxing-inspired collection for H&M, and his sneaker-inspired Spring/Summer 2015 collection, which he debuted last week during New York Fashion Week. Sitting front row at his show was Rihanna, who has been rocking looks from his H&M collab as well as his upcoming SS15 line. At the show she wore Wang, of course, and we spotted one of his new sneaker-inspired bags on her lap.
Alexander Wang’s ‘Sneaker’ Bags ($1,295) are quite the departure from his previous accessories collections, which featured pebbled leather cult favorites like the Rocco Duffel and Diego Bucket Bag. Those bags were edgy, and had a ‘downtown girl’ aesthetic. He then moved on to a sleeker aesthetic with more structured handbags like his Emile Tote and Pelican Sling. These sneaker bags look like they were loosely inspired by several famous kicks, including Adidas Stan Smiths, Nike Air Jordans and Air Force Ones.
The collection as a whole is really trendy and definitely a step in a different direction for Alexander Wang. The bags seem to be skewed towards a younger, sportier woman – sneakerheads who love high fashion? They’d make fun conversation pieces and cool collectors items, but unless you’re a die-hard sports lover, I couldn’t see anyone wearing these on a daily basis.
