Stuart Weitzman’s 2011 spring/summer collection handbags are made of nanai salmon leather

Stuart Weitzman Handbag Spring Summer collection 2011 Jade nanai salmon bagsWe’re quite familiar with the bevy of materials used to make exotic handbags, including crocodile, caiman, python, watersnake, ostrich and eelskin. But salmon? It never entered our minds. But innovative shoe designer Stuart Weitzman has incorporated the fish skin into four handbag models for his 2011 spring/summer collection.

The statement-making “Jade” line contains a range of silhouettes, from shoulder bags to totes, clutches and mini bags. The collection was inspired by the energy of fashion created in metropolitan cities like New York, and colorfully mixes printed leather with nanai accents throughout. The bags, just like Weitzman’s shoes, are elegant and classic, and incredibly durable.

The material, manufactured by Germany-based Salmo Leather GmbH, is called nanai, and is similar to snakeskin in its appearance. Made from the skin of organically raised salmon, tis eco-friendly material is tanned using a biodegradable substitute resulting in a 100% chrome-free tanning process, which preserves the structure of the salmon skin.

The Stuart Weitzman nanai bags will be available this coming spring in Stuart Weitzman and other retail stores in the United States, some foreign markets and Stuart Weitzman online.
