Top 9 bags of 2009 by Handbag du Jour

It’s been a busy year blogging about bags and now we’ve come to the end of 2009 so we decided to compile a list of the top 9 bags of 2009. In no particular order are the bags that made us swoon, drool, and whip out those credit cards and shop! Check them out below and share your favorite bags of the year!

1. Jimmy Choo Mandah Hobo
All the girls carried the Jimmy Choo ‘Mandah’ Hobo BagJimmy Choo Mandah. Halle, J Lo. and Jessica Alba were fans of this smooth calfskin leather and suede bag in brown, leopard and hot pink. With a zippered gusset panel down the front and back center and two rolled handles accented with gold bands, the Mandah was the perfect hobo and the suede/leather combo made it great for any season.

2. YSL Easy Studded Y Bag
Any bag that can distract AWAY from Lady Gaga’s outfits HAD to make the list. The YSL Easy Studded Y Bag was a fave of Gaga, Adrienne Bailon and many other celebs. YSL bags are typically very understated and simple but even they got in on the 2009 studs trend and executed it perfectly. The result was a fabulous duffel bag that we couldn’t take our eyes off of. And that’s no easy feat when you’re in the hands of Lady Gaga.

3. Alexander Wang Coco Duffel
Alexander Wang was the designer of the moment this year. With easy, cool separates and accessories, and a celebrity following led by Rihanna, Mary-Kate Olsen and Amber Rose, it was easy to add Wang to the list. The Alexander Wang Coco Duffel was one of this year’s edgiest bags, with tough leather and even tougher bullet studs on the bottom. The exclusive blue denim version was to-die-for and the grey and tan versions were nice too.

4. Kooba Alex Tote
I’m a bit biased since I own and love this bag, but the Kooba Alex Tote was a must-have this year. The rich aubergine glazed leather was ever-so-slightly distressed, giving it a vintage vibe, while the mini studs gave it modern appeal. The shape was just right – not too big, not too small, and had Kooba’s signature unstructured, ’sling it over the shoulder and go’ feel.

5. Alexander McQueen Faithful Glove Clutch
The Alexander McQueen Faithful Glove Clutch may not have been directly related to the late Michael Jackson but it certainly paid homage to him and his iconic style. The luxe leather clutch featured a detachable fingerless glove on the front, with slanted zippers on either side. We’re sure the King of Pop would have approved.

6. Chloé Paraty Python Tote
This. Bag. Is. Amazing! There’s not much more that needs to be said. With a brilliant design and luxurious python, Chloé really redeemed itself with the Paraty Tote. We haven’t been this excited about Chloé since the Paddington!

7. Valentino Shining Flower Tux 360 Tote
If it was on Gossip Girl, it had to be good. The Valentino Shining Flower Tux 360 Tote made its debut on the show with Blair Waldorf drooling over it and women all over the world followed suit. Following in the footsteps of Valentino’s couture creations, the 360 is what you could call a couture handbag. Rows of black sequins, cream-colored ‘petals’, crystals and a large bow are everything you’d expect from the design house, but wrapped up onto one pretty bag.

8. Rebecca Minkoff Stud Devote Belted Tote
Studded bags were BIG this year and who better to create one than Rebecca Minkoff? The Stud Devote Belted Tote reached instant cult handbag status with its wide, belted and buckled main opening and rows of studs around the top and bottom bands. The edgy bag incorporated Minkoff’s signature California cool with the hot stud trend.

9. Novella Royale Mister Studded Tote
Green is the new black, or haven’t you heard? Novella Royale debuted the hottest in green (eco-friendly) bags this year and our fave was their Mister Studded Tote. This handmade bag is made of recycled leather from motorcycle jackets (so no two are the same), and the oversized resin studs made it look brand spanking new!

SJP looked stunning heading to the “Late Show with David Letterman” to promote her new film, “Did You Hear About the Morgans?“. She wore a gray blazer, red bustier, sequin skirt (and later changed into jeans and a black velvet blazer) and carried a Chanel tote and a showstopping pink bag by Diane de Maria.

Diane de Maria is the granddaughter of famed painter Pierre de Maria, an as a formally trained artist, she decided to incorporate her love for painting into fashion (handbags). de Maria uses a ‘lithogravure’ technique of surrealist imagery on her French calf leather and patent leather handbags. SJP carried the Diane de Maria ‘Bonnie’ Bag, a gorgeous pink patent leather satchel embossed with de Maria’s signature artwork.

Leona Lewis steps up her bag game with the Stella McCartney Falabella Bucket Bag

Leona Lewis has officially stepped up her bag game. The singer previously loved her low-priced Deux Lux bags but now has moved up the fashion ladder to Stella McCartney. She recently appeared on the “Late Show With David Letterman” and carried the Falabella Bucket Bag, a black metallic faux leather tote with chain shoulder straps. (Rihanna also likes Stella McCartney bags - preferably the Falabella City Chain tote). The bag also has gunmetal chain trim around the center and bottom. For a ‘green’ bag, it’s pretty hot. But Stella McCartney is a master at that.

Designer Rachel Roy attended the New York screening of “NINE”, co-hosted by Martini, at the Ziegfeld Theatre in New York City dressed head-to-toe in Rachel Roy. We love that although she designs a high fashion line she chose to carry a bag from her diffusion line, RACHEL Rachel Roy. She toted her Spray Garden clutch, a printed bag with peace sign ornament at the front. Vince Camuto to launch handbags

According to WWD, Vince Camuto is planning to enter the handbag market to sell alongside his shoe brand. Since 2006, Camuto has made incredible women’s shoes that are equal parts sexy, comfy and thrifty. My Vince Camuto booties took me through New York Fashion Week quite stylishly! His handbags are set to retail from $170 to $280, and will be sold at Nordstrom, Dillard’s, Macy’s and Kitson this spring. The bags will come in an array of silhouettes, from large shoppers to smaller shoulder bags and clutches and are made of soft marble leather. Details include chain mesh hardware, fringe and tassels, with a large insignia of the Camuto family crest on each bag. Love the beige clutch with stud detail on the flap - so perfect forSpring!

“I consider myself a merchant and I don’t feel restricted to any one category, although I do love shoes. But we took a look at the market and thought this was the right time to make bags that connect to our footwear. We pride ourselves on perceived value. If you ‘keep up with the Kardashian’s’, you know they love their designer handbags. Khloe (who is acting like a major brat by the way on the new season of the show) visited the SIRIUS XM Studio in New York City with sister Kim. Likely to pub the show. She carried the Alexander Wang Daphne Duffel Bag which we’re not too fond of. It’s a bit of a big furry mess and looks a bit cheap compared to Wang’s other bags. Or maybe Khloe’s just not doing it justice. Such a bag deserves a more casual or edgy look, like jeans and a leather biker jacket. you know, Rihanna-style. Gossip Girl’s new Queen Bee, Little J (Jenny Humphrey for those not in the know) is really living up to her title. Because only the Queen has the right to carry the bag of the moment. On this week’s episode, Jenny toted her new YSL Roady ($1,295), much to the surprise of her ‘court’. “It’s not even in stores yet!” But the Queen gets what the Queen wants. And what she wants is to be the new Blair Waldorf, the reigning “Bee” who wears the latest and gifts her followers with matching YSL Roady bags. Good job Little J.

Apparently Dick’s Sporting Goods is the new celebrity and paparazzi hangout. Both Kim Kardashian and Giuliana Rancic have been photographed while shopping for Reebok EasyTone sneakers. This smells of ’staged photoshoot’ but we’ll pretend these were ‘candids’. Kim Kardashian was spotted at Dick’s Sporting Goods in Woodland Hills, California carrying her black Hermes handbag. Guiliana Rancic was spotted at Dick’s Sporting Goods in El Segundo, California toting her Louis Vuitton Tivoli GM. Both ladies looked fab sneaker shopping with their designer bags.

Bag Lady: Thank Full

Thanksgiving has always been my favorite time of the year. I have so much to be thankful for: good friends, a loving family, decent career and the best handbag collection this side of the NYC. Although, I feel like something else should be occupying my arm, like a good looking man with a Black card.

Most of my friends and family got up early to participate in the madness they call Black Friday. I don’t even bother unless Bloomingdales has doobuster specials for Chanel and Chloé. I highly doubt that. Instead, I take advantage of the all the food to eat and take home with me. I even brought my doggy bag. Actually, it’s my Versace Quilted Leather Shopper. It’s roomy enough for me to be Thank Full for the entire week.

I can’t wait to see what Santa has in store for me!

Kate Moss totes her new BBF - the namesake ‘Kate’ fringe bag by Genevieve Jones

Wouldn’t you love to have a bag named after you? If we did, we’d be carrying it around everywhere too. Kate Moss recently attended the launch of the SingStar ‘Take That’ Extravaganza at The Tabernacle in London, England with this statement-making bag in tow. She has been spotted on multiple other occasions toting her new BBF^TM (bag best friend), the black Kate Fringe Bag by friend and fellow It girl Genevieve Jones. Jones, who for years had no job to speak of but managed to rise to the top of the social ladder and has recently become a fine jewelry/luxury handbag designer. Mmmk. But this Kate bag isn’t half bad. It’s crafted from Italian lambskin leather and embellished with a lengthy shoulder strap and fringe. It also has gold logo hardware and a drawstring closure. Not bad for a socialite turned designer.
