Handbag du Jour interviews handbag designer Joanna Maxham + a giveaway!

In the ever-growing field of handbag design, it’s always nice to come across a fresh collection full of classic, wearable pieces that don’t follow trends, but instead, allow you to set your own. I first had the opportunity to preview some of Joanna Maxham’s Fall 2009 collection while judging a recent “Rock the Look” fashion event held at Shoegasm. (That’s me pictured on the right, with the Cast Away in port wine.) The bags were beautifully crafted, ever-so-slightly structured and made of butter-soft leathers. They weren’t trendy, but still pretty pieces that you could cherish forever. And in addition to their beauty, they were - most importantly, practical. Large bags with lots of room and tons of useful pockets and compartments are just some of the characteristics behind those beautiful bags.

Hilary Duff does Gossip Girl and dons Mulberry

Hilary Duff is set to appear on the upcoming season of Gossip Girl. She was spotted filming on set with Blake Lively (Serena Van der Woodsen), Chace Crawford (Nate Archibald) and Penn Badgeley (Dan Humphrey). She wore a floral print sundress and flaunted a turquoise Mulberry Mitzy Hobo while smooching Badgeley. No word on whether or not her role is a one-time deal or recurring but I wonder how this storyline will play out…

Rihanna finds a brand new bag: the Chanel Flap bag

Rihanna was spotted on the streets again, doing her usual - nothing. The sidewalk strutting singer wore a black tank and cutoff shorts and this time she switched up her bag from her usual Alexander Wang wardrobe to a Chanel. She worked the Chanel Lambskin Flap Handbag in black with a a long chain strap and further accessorized with brown oxford shoes and a tightly clutched green folder. What’s inside Rih Rih - songs? Scripts? The suspense is killing us!

Celebrities like Lauren Conrad and Rihanna love their CC SKYE jewelry but the CC SKYE handbag collection has some pretty covetable pieces too. Spotted: Isla Fisher with Coach’s new Parker Slim Tote

Wondering what kind of bag a ‘Shopaholic‘ carries? Well it’s a Coach! Confessions of a Shopaholic star Isla Fisher was spotted carrying the new Parker Slim Tote by Coach ($358), in a spring-like in mauve color. But the bag is actually from Coach’s Fall/Winter ‘09 collection. She also sported the brand’s Geralynn sandals from Spring 2009. The Coach Parker handbag collection was a favorite of mine for Spring with its ladylike sensibilities, and now it’s making a return this Fall with ultra-soft gelato leather and those oh-so-cute twisted and knotted handles. Hilary Duff does no justice to the Alexander McQueen Faithful Glove Clutch

One of the must-have clutches of the Fall season is hands down, the Alexander McQueen Faithful Glove Clutch. The bag was inspired by Marianne Faithfull but I love that it looks like a throwback to Michael Jackson. Hilary Duff carried the clutch last week to the Charlotte Ronson and J.C. Penney celebration of the launch of Charlotte Ronson’s ‘I Heart Ronson’ clothing line. But she didn’t do it any justice! The point of the attached glove is to wear it like a glove, with the bag attached. What’s the point of it if you’re just going to cover it up with your hand? Also, this bag is meant for a much edgier outfit than a tee, scarf and leggings. Maybe Hilary should leave the edgy, high fashion pieces to her peers and stick with wearing Stuff by Hilary Duff. That seems to be more her style.

Rihanna sports some off-the-chain shades and a Balenciaga Brilliant Pouchette

No celebrity can match Rihanna’s fashion right now. This girl’s style game looks simply effortless. Sure she has a stylist to pull pieces for her and put her looks together but she pulls off pretty much any and everything she wears. The girl about town was spotted in a tan vest, ripped jeans, and fringed boots and wearing the higly coveted shades - the Love / Hate convertible chain-strap sunglasses by A. Morir by Kerin Rose and the Balenciaga Brilliant Pouchette Bague in black. The small lizard leather flap front bag retails for $2,675 at Barney’s and features two-gussets and studded-plate hardware on the front, with a leather interior with two compartments. But why spend three grand for this tiny purse when you could buy two Balenciaga motorcycle bags for the same price?

Christina Milian was spotted arriving to her hotel in Manhattan yesterday looking a lot more fabulous than she did with that tacky bleached blonde hair. Kelly Osbourne with the Alexander McQueen Faithful hobo

I don’t really equate the name Kelly Osbourne with the word fashion, but she tends to carry some cutting-edge bags that pique my interest. She recently went to the Nokia Skate Almighty launch in London, England in an ‘interesting’ get-up paired with the Alexander McQueen large Faithful Hobo. I’m personally more partial to the Alexander McQueen Faithful Glove Clutch that is inspired by Marianne Faithfull and looks like a throwback to Michael Jackson. But the large Faithful tote isn’t half bad. Actually, this asymmetrical shaped bucket bag is a beauty. It has all the edge McQueen is famous for with tons of zips and snaps that manage to look perfectly placed and not at all overwhelming. It is a big bag (19″ x 8″ x 14″) with tons of multifunctional interior and exterior pockets. My favorite part of the bag though are the curved corners that are stitched to look like Madonna’s cone bras from the eighties.

Bag review: Kooba Alex tote

I’ve loved Kooba handbags pretty much since their inception, so when I received the Kooba Alex tote from the Fall 09/10 collection, I was thrilled! My chat with Kooba designer and creative director Abbe Held is soon to come, but for now I’ll tell you all you need to know about this must-have bag!

I received the aubergine (plum) color - the bag also comes in black and cognac. The color bleeds a bit so I would advise against wearing it with a white shirt (I learned the hard way). It’s made of glazed, distressed leather and it has a beautiful sheen that remains even as you break it in. The bag is super roomy, which I love, because I only like to carry one bag for the day and need to be able to fit everything inside it. Currently I have my usual bag essentials, and am also able to fit a pair of sandals, hardcover book, umbrella and bottle of water inside. And it doesn’t at all look bulky or feel heavy on my arm! Kooba’s leathers are sturdy yet lightweight, and the crraftsmanship is so well done that you don’t have to worry about it falling apart at the seams.

The bag is slightly structured and slightly slouchy so you no matter which you prefer, you get the best of both worlds. The shape is sort of pentagonal, with a top magnetic snap closure and side gussets that meet at the top, with three large brass snaps on either side. The only thing is if you stuff the bag full like I do, the snaps at times pop open. However, you have to be carrying A LOT of stuff for that to happen. And the snaps are positioned to let the bag expand in the event you want to pack it full.

There are two adjustable shoulder straps with old English brass buckles and brass patterned studded flaps down both edges of the bag, on the front and back sides. The studs are perfectly balanced so it doesn’t feel like a trendy piece that will be out of style in a few months, but rather a nice design element on a classic bag. Inside the bag there are tons of pockets including an interior zip pocket, two slide cell phone pockets and and a pen pocket. The inside is fully lined in satin and includes an interior key clip.

Bag dimensions: 13″ high x 20″ at the widest point x 5″ deep
Shoulder drop: length adjusts from 9″ to 13″

I’ve been carrying the bag since I received it and have no plans of changing it anytime soon. It really meets all of my bag needs - it’s large, compartmentalized, slightly edgy, and sturdy. And the color really looks great with everything I wear!

Haute or Not: the Alexander Wang Bianca Vest Bag as seen on Amber Rose

Between Rihanna and Amber Rose, Alexander Wang never has to pay for publicity again. The two ladies seem to put on their own personal fashion shows on the streets of New York, Los Angeles and Miami, day after day, and a lot of their wardrobes seem to be designed by Alexander Wang.

Amber Rose in particular is starting to get a bit of a Kanye complex - with her frequent ‘candid’ appearances and odd displays of fashion. She was spotted hand in hand with the Louis Vuitton don in what I thought at first was some strange sort of S&M contraption (-hey, who know what these two are into?), but actually turned out to be the Alexander Wang Bianca Vest Bag.

This pebbled leather vest/bag has ten zip pockets on the front as well as a zip side pocket, and adjustable shoulder straps. I think it also doubles as a bullet proof vest or some sort of convertible fanny pack that you wear around your neck. It’s different, that’s for sure, but would you wear it? And would you pay $850 for it?

Rihanna. In Alexander Wang. Again.

News alert: Rihanna was spotted with two new Alexander Wang bags. Oh wait, that’s not news, because when is Rihanna NOT spotted with two new Alexander Wang bags? I think the designer may have to design a new collection around her since she’s got so many of them that there won’t be any left for the season. Her latest? The black denim leather Alexander Wang Donna Hobo and the blue Alexander Wang Denim Leather Brenda Zip Bag.

Both bags feature the look of denim plus super-soft distressed, washed leather. The Donna hobo features two welt pockets and four zip pockets with a wraparound zip gusset at the front and back. The long shoulder strap ties at the top and there’s a main zip closure. 13″ x 15″ with a 16″ strap drop.

The Brenda zip bag features two zipper pockets and two welt pockets at the front and a zippered leather patch at the snake-chain strap. It also has a zip main closure. Measures 7″ x 10″ x 3″ with a 22″ strap drop.

Rebecca Minkoff Morning After Bag in Iguana

Rebecca Minkoff’s Morning After Bag is one of those addictive bags that you just can’t have too many of. I know this all too well. Her Fall collection features a new take on the traditional MAB - iguana. Ok, not ‘real’ iguana skin, because that would just be creepy, but iguana-embossed leather. This Rebecca Minkoff Iguana Morning After Mini Bag is hot! I love the contrasting textures - exotics mixed with a solid leather is always a win/win. Read more

Kendall Conrad’s ‘Playera’ bag ignites the wanderlust in you

Oh, how I wish I were somewhere tropical and exotic instead of in the sweltering humidity of New York City. So for now I’ll just daydream of some place filled with sparkling blue water, soft sand and a colorful backdrop. I can even imagine what I’d be wearing - something beachy - and the bag I’d be carrying - the Kendall Conrad Playera bag. Read more

In case you haven’t noticed, Lady Gaga is the new pop queen of shock and awe dress. Move over Madonna. Her talent is questionable but when it comes to her love of fashion risk-taking, there is no question - she’s down. She was out recently with Perez Hilton (BFF alert?) wearing a get-up that only Amy Winehouse and Aubrey O’Day could be proud of - bad wig, skanky leotard, leopard panties, ripped fishnets, stripper boots. But she redeemed herself (only slightly) with that studded YSL Easy Tote - the only smart choice in this entire getup.

Agyness Deyn rocks the red carpet with red lips and a red lip clutch by Lulu Guinness

Who knew a pair of lips would be in such demand? ‘Supermodel of the moment’ Agyness Deyn was the latest to carry the Lulu Guinness Lips clutch, £195 (Katy Perry is also a fan of Guinness’ lips clutch – her fave is the metallic pink snakeskin embossed version). She was spotted leaving her favorite Tuscan restaurant in the West Village, Bar Pitti, with hubby Jay-Z, her bodyguard and a new, flattened curly wig that looked like it was on loan from Rick James. Those wigs didn’t even look good on him. And her polka dotted romper, Chanel belt and jewelry didn’t help matters either. Thank goodness for that Dior Samourai 1947 Woven Frame Bag she was carrying - it was the one and only saving grace in her entire look!

The woven Samourai is the best bag Dior debuted since the saddlebag. Made in Italy, it comes in fuchsia (shown), green, or brown basketweave leather with twisted trim throught the body and shoulder straps. There is a matching Louis XVI picture frame tag with a Dior logo and a tortoiseshell frame top with rings and serpents. Molto bella!
