Haute or Not: the Zambos & Siega Umbrella Purse

It seems like every handbag designer’s mantra these days is ‘fashion meets function’. So knowing that I shouldn’t have been taken aback when I first saw this Zambos & Siega Umbrella Purse. The bag itself is a plain, boxy satchel made of wrinkled patent leather. And yes, it’s practical. There’s always that one day when it rains and you left your umbrella at home so if you’re toting this bag around on a rainy day, you’re in luck! But do you really want to carry around a tote bag with an umbrella sticking out one end on a daily basis? It’s one of those handbags that’s fun to look at and talk about but not one you’d really want to carry. I personally can’t imagine carrying this on a New York subway, banging my umbrella bag into everyone. But would you carry it? Would you buy one?

While I really can’t justify spending more money on a clutch/pouch/wallet than I do on a bag, or, for that matter, a bill, this one almost makes me want to change my mind. It’s no bigger than an envelope and looks totally impractical but it’s just so damn cute! The bright blue leather is very Marc Jacobs - who loves to incorporate shockingly bright colors in his unique designs. The clutch/pouch/wallet is made of Italian leather with three heart ‘appliques’ on the front and an exterior slip pocket. At 8″ X 4″ X 1″, it really can’t hold more than your credit cards and cash, which will be non-existent if you spend the $495 to buy it.

Teenybopper fashion is apparently the new black. Ashley Tisdale (who I must admit for the longest time I had no clue who she was but later found out she was of High School Musical fame) was spotted in JFK airport with her huge Louis Vuitton Stephen Monogram Embossed Cuir bag. The bag was designed by Stephen Sprouse and Marc Jacobs for his Fall-Winter 2006 collection but the bag is getting a new wind with teenyboppers like Tisdale and Vanessa Hudgens sporting them and even Real Housewives of Atlanta ’star’ Sheree Whitfield creating a birthday cake based on the design. The bag is borderline tacky with the acrylic shoulder strap and tortoiseshell link handle but somehow the design and embossed leather glam it up enough to save it from being labeled ‘not haute’.

Celebrity Handbag Spotting: Christina Milian with the L.A.M.B. Mandeville Satchel

Christina Milian is one of those celebrities who always manages to look cute in her ‘candid’ photos. She was spotted out and about recently in a laid-back casual look with a weather leather jacket, wide-leg jeans and the brown L.A.M.B. ‘Signature - Mandeville Small’ Satchel. The coated logo canvas bag has contrast grained leather trim. Details include a striped band down the center that encircles the entire bag, and burgundy patent rolled leather handles with link attachments. It’s the perfect bag for a California-casual fashionista like Christina!

Haute or Not: the See by Chloé Medium Slouchy Hobo

I try to give Chloé the benefit of the doubt, I really do. But then they design amazingly tacky bags like this See by Chloé Medium slouchy hobo. The black slouchy lambskin hobo bag with is nothing special really, but I could deal with it if it weren’t for that circular leather logo tag hanging from the front pocket. What is that and why is it there? Is it a zipper pull gone wrong? It looks all wrong. And the 1980’s/Madonna-era acrylic bangles on both sides are just out of place. I would really love to know how people get jobs at these design houses designing crap like this. And in the middle of a recession, no less!

Haute or Not: the Marni Triangle Slouchy Hobo

I’m loving maroon/red/burgundy colored bags for the fall and winter. The rich, deep red hues add a nice burst of color but not so bright that it looks harsh. At first glance, I was taken with this Marni Triangle slouchy hobo. When viewed from the side, the bag has some appeal with its gathered side seams and brick red colored leather. But straight on, the bag is a bit strange. The triangle shape is almost too perfect so that it no longer looks like a bag, but just a slouchy geometry shape. And the mini contrast leather top handles look impractical and silly. So, in reality, you can’t carry a bag only on its side. So is it haute enough that you want it, or do you just want to pass on it?

Celebrity Handbag Spotting: Oprah Winfrey with the Fendi Doctor Style Tote

Once again, I am a bit annoyed with celebrities carrying extra large bags on the red carpet. Red carpet looks should be reserved for petite clutches and minaudieres. But in my eyes, Lady O can really do whatever she wants, and whatever bag she’s carrying, on or off the red carpet is sure to redefine red carpet style. Oprah’s Fendi Doctor style tote looks extra chic alongside her buckled grey dress, gunmetal cuff and peep-toe Christian Louboutins. The structured bag has two unstructured wing-like flaps on either end, with two short handles and hidden pockets at each end with press stud fastenings at the top. The bag is simple but has that special touch that you either love or hate about Fendi. I’m just happy I can afford Oprah’s style. Well, her bag at least.

Madonna Tapped to be New Face of Louis Vuitton

At 50 years old, Madonna’s still got it! The Material Girl was personally selected by Marc Jacobs to be the face of the newest Louis Vuitton advertising campaign. After recently attending a Madonna concert, MJ was moved and ‘blown away by her energy’, so he text messaged her via Blackberry asking her to do it. Her response? “I’d love to.”

Shot by Steven Meisel, the campaign features six images of Madonna in various stages of yoga-like poses with the new LV collection. The campaign has a Parisian feel which corresponds with the new collection, and was shot in Figaro Restaurant, to give the feel of a smoky French bistro. The first ads will highlight slouchy monogram canvas bags and monogram-embossed leather, as well as ethnic-inspired sandals, bangle bracelets and ready-to-wear, and will begin appearing in magazines in February and March 2009.

Celebrity Handbag Spotting: Monica with the Louis Vuitton Embossed Large Leather Tote Bag

While I will never understand some celebrities’ obsession with carrying large Louis Vuitton bags on the red carpet, it doesn’t diminish my love for the brand. R&B singer Monica was spotted at the recent ‘Dirty Awards’ show, rocking the Louis Vuitton Embossed Large Leather Tote Bag from the Fall/Winter 2008-2009 collection. The bag features cognac calf leather embossed with “Louis Vuitton Paris” all over. Basically it is a typical LV bag, covered in the logo, but the embossing gives it a more mature and classy appeal. Other features include a thick shoulder strap with link chain attachments and a 8.25″ drop, dangling leather tassel and gold hardware.

Stephane Verdino Metallic Leather Large Tote

It seems like I can’t go more than a few days without drooling over another metallic bag. Who said this trend was over?! The Stephane Verdino Metallic Leather Large Tote is hot - and I should have it. Now! This large (24½” X 17″ X 7″), triangular shaped tote is made of silver leather and has double handles that are ‘pinched’ at the top and extend down the front of the bag. It’s nothing more than a basic tote but the French styling, suede lining and metallic leather, of course, make it tres-chic!

YSL Small Downtown Tote

Yves St. Laurent doesn’t venture out too much when it comes to handbag design but the few silhouettes they do have definitely have staying power. The Small Downtown Tote is one of my favorites and this new blue version is incredible! I love the casual look of it even though it’s such a luxe handbag. Navy bags are the new black and this tote combines the ombre / degrade trend with the navy bag trend perfectly. I could see myself carrying this on the weekend with some sexy skinny jeans and riding boots with a chunky sweater and leather jacket. This might be a piece that you’ll have to store in a year, since it’s so trendy, but if you’ve got a little money to spare, it’s worth the short-term splurge!

Zac Posen Sistine Draped Satchel

Zac Posen is by far one of my (and most other women’s) favorite designers, and for good reason. His dress silhouettes embrace and enhance a woman’s natural shape and his handbags have been, for the most part, stunning. But as much as I try, I just can’t seem to embrace this bag. With a name like the Sistine Draped Satchel, I would expect a beautiful work of art. Instead, all I’m getting is confused. I can’t put my finger on it but there’s just something off and a bit odd about the shape of the bag. The handle looks too stiff for a bag that fans out so wide at the bottom, and the dual front pleats look accidental rather than intentional. The topstitching adds nothing to the bag and the silver studs look out of place. Overall, I’m unimpressed. But I love Zac Posen anyway and hope next time he’ll do better!
